Pain & Stress Relief
Why Does My Neck Feel as Hard as Steel?
What chronic neck and shoulder tightness is really telling you, and how gentle bodywork helps it let go.

If your neck and shoulders feel tight no matter how much you stretch, you are not imagining it. Many people carry years of tension in these areas without realizing how hard the tissue has actually become. The body holds on quietly, and over time that holding turns into stiffness, reduced movement, and pain.
When the Neck Becomes as Hard as Steel
On some clients I notice the neck so hard, that it feels like a steel belted tire, or maybe just the steel part. It was so hard and in most cases it was from stress held in. When stressed, people tend to tighten parts in their body, they don't realize that they are hurting their bodies by doing so. They are aging their bodies quicker. By aging I mean looking older, losing their flexibility, their 'spring', and their range of motion.
Why Stress Lives in the Tissue
Myofascial release works gently with the fascia, the thin connective tissue that wraps every muscle in the neck, shoulders, and upper back. When a person holds stress for years, that fascia tightens and binds, and the area loses its natural softness and spring. Releasing it slowly and without force gives the tissue a chance to soften and the body a chance to remember how it is meant to move. Craniosacral therapy and quiet somatic work support this by calming the nervous system that has been on guard for so long.
The myofascial release approach developed by John F. Barnes teaches that restrictions in the fascia can place enormous pressure on the muscles, nerves, and pain sensitive structures of the body. Gentle and sustained pressure allows these restrictions to release, which often relieves pain that other approaches miss.

A Story From the Treatment Room
On one young female client I could not understand how someone so young could have a neck so hard. I mean this would have taken years to build up to this tightness. It baffled me as I worked on softening this tightness. Suddenly I see this vision. I see a mother, out of the blue, for no reason, suddenly back handing this little girl of about 6 or 7 years old, who had just been sitting there innocently doing nothing. She caught her daughter by surprise with the sudden back lashing hand against the innocent girl's face. It was then that I said, "you know, when you were little, you never knew when you were going to get hurt" (so she tightened herself in 24/7 alert 'protection' mode). I said, "now that you are older, no one is going to hurt you anymore". And she cried. That's when I knew it was true.
Details in this story have been changed to protect client privacy.
The work of Dr. Peter Levine on somatic experiencing shows that the body holds protective survival responses long after the original danger has passed. What began as protection can become a chronic pattern of holding in the muscles and nervous system, one the body can finally release with gentle and direct support.
