What Does the Research Actually Say About Cannabinoids?
A clear look at what science is studying, what a real government patent says, and how this fits a natural view of healing.

Few natural topics carry as much confusion as cannabinoids, the compounds found in the cannabis plant. There is a great deal of noise around them, some of it exaggerated and some of it dismissed too quickly. What gets lost is the steady and growing body of real research. Let us set the noise aside and look at what is actually being studied, and what one genuine government patent reveals.
What Researchers Are Actually Studying
Cannabinoids interact with a system in the body called the endocannabinoid system, which helps regulate pain, mood, sleep, and inflammation. Because of this, researchers have spent years studying cannabinoids for several specific uses. The most established areas of study include the easing of certain kinds of pain, the reduction of nausea, particularly nausea connected to chemotherapy, and the calming of inflammation in the body.
More recent work has looked at compounds like cannabidiol, often called CBD, for their potential to protect nerve cells and reduce oxidative stress. Some studies have explored whether these compounds can help prevent the nerve pain that can follow chemotherapy. This is promising and active science, and it is honest to say that much of it is still being studied rather than fully settled.
The Patent Most People Have Never Heard Of
Here is a fact that surprises many people. The United States government holds a real patent on cannabinoids. It is patent number 6,630,507, titled "Cannabinoids as Antioxidants and Neuroprotectants." It describes cannabinoids as having value in protecting the brain and nervous system and in reducing oxidative stress. In 2011 the National Institutes of Health licensed this patent to a company to develop it further.
This patent is genuine and it is interesting precisely because it exists. It tells us that the protective potential of these plant compounds has been taken seriously enough at the highest levels to be formally documented. It is a real piece of public record, not a rumor.
United States patent 6,630,507, "Cannabinoids as Antioxidants and Neuroprotectants," is held through the Department of Health and Human Services and was licensed by the National Institutes of Health Office of Technology Transfer in 2011 for further development.
My Own View as a Bodyworker

Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor ntagonism.

(The NMDA receptor is one of two kinds of receptors activated by glutimates). This new found roperty makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of a wide variety of oxidation associated
diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and auto-immune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage
following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and HIV dementia.

Since the cost of prescription drugs is so outrageous, I thought
everyone should know about this. It pays to shop around! This helps
to solve the mystery as to why they can afford to put a Walgreen's
on every corner. On Monday night, Steve Wilson, an investigative
reporter for Channel 7 News in Detroit , did a story on generic
drug prices gouging by pharmacies. He found in his investigation
that some of these generic drugs were marked up as much as 3,000%
or more. So often we blame the drug companies for the high cost
of drugs, and usually rightfully so. But in this case, the fault
clearly lies with the pharmacies themselves. For example if you had
to buy a prescription drug, and bought the name brand, you might
pay $100 for 100 pills.
The pharmacist might tell you that if you get the generic equivalent,
they would only cost $80, making you think you are saving $20. What
the pharmacist is not telling you is that those 100 generic pills
may have only cost him $10!
At the end of the report, one of the anchors asked Mr. Wilson
whether or not there were any pharmacies that did not adhere to
this practice, and he said that Costco consistently charged little
over their cost for the generic drugs.
I went to the Costco site, where you can look up any drug, and get
its online price. It says that the in-store prices are consistent
with the online prices. I was appalled. Just to give you one example
from my own experience I had to use the drug Compazine which helps
prevent nausea in chemo patients.
I used the generic equivalent, which cost $54.99 for 60 pills at
CVS. I checked the price at Costco, and I could have bought 100
pills for $19.89. For 145 of my pain pills, I paid $72.57. I could
have got 150 at Costco for $28.08.
I would like to mention, that although Costco is a 'membership' type
store, you do NOT have to be a member to buy prescriptions there
as it is a federally regulated substance. You just tell them at
the door that you wish to use the pharmacy, and they will let you in.
I am asking each of you to please help me by copying this letter,
and passing it into your own e-mail, and send it to everyone you
know with an e-mail address.
